Show air date: June 30, 2021
This episode was the last AEW episode broadcasted from Daily’s Place and they went out on a good note. My first reaction when they started was “Oh Bast. Jericho got his whole entrance? Man, Khan loves him.”Then to find out the first match was the tag title eliminator so LeTRUMPion might be there the whole show. I was already dreading this episode. Dude is the worst of the many guest commentators they rotate.
Eddie Kingston and Penta El Zero Meido defeated The Young Bucks
Then tag champs, the Young Bucks–Nick and Matt Jackson–came out for their tag match with the suddenly controversial (again) Eddie Kingston and Penta. The Young Bucks with the best bad mustaches ever and…they almost made me a fan. I do like the Bucks as heels. Matt plays way too much to the camera and kills a lot of the seriousness (fix that, somebody) but they definitely have better heel swag.
Good Promo with the Men of the Year
Good promo segment with the Men of the Year–“All Ego” Ethan Page and Scorpio Sky– the week before Page’s scheduled Coffin match with longtime rival, Darby Allin. Allin and Sting come out and get the best of the MotY with Page calling off the match and possibly doing at the Fyter Fest as long as Allin agrees to a “no contract” rule prior to the match. I think moving this match back just a bit is a good move.
Jungle Boy defeated Jack Evans
It was a good idea to have Jungle Boy Jack Perry get his heat back off his loss to world champion Kenny Omega this week, beating Jack Evans and becoming the first AEW wrestler to reach 50 wins. Big brawl at the end with the Matt Hardy and his Hardy Family Office stable and Jurassic Express and their new friend, Christian Cage.
Looking Forward to Andrade vs Sydal
I look forward to Andrade El Idolo vs Matt Sydal but why have him with Alex Abrahantes and not let Abrahantes translate? And why not have Andrade’s damn manager–Vickie Guerrero– with him? She’s got a match that night? So? Pre-tapes, fam (and don’t book her into matches).
Is This How They Get to Omega vs Hangman?
Whew. For a second I thought someone from the Dark Order was going to challenge Omega (with his Ole Anderson mutton chops). But if this is how they get to Omega vs Hangman Page, fine. Hey Hangman, listen to them. If anyone can tell you about failure, it’s the Dark Order.
Miro (c) defeated Brian Pillman Jr.
for the TNT Championship
They really didn’t need the promo from Brian Pillman Jr’s title match against TNT champion, Miro. Not that good. The match itself was good with Pillman playing that “scrappy young underdog” role he was working in MLW and Miro just being a beast on his way to a dominant victory.
Britt Baker, DMD and Rebel defeated Nyla Rose and Vickie Guerrero
Nothing about the Nyla Rose and Vickie Guerrero vs Rebel and Women’s champion, Dr. Britt Baker, DMD made any sense. Why is this a match? Why did Vickie start it? Unfortunately for the second night in a row, another competitor got hurt for real, this time Rebel in a victory for her team. Rose got the last laugh, putting the champion through a table after the match. Not the best use of this division this week.
Effective Stairwell Promo
Effective stairwell promo from Jake Hager and Proud N Powerful.
Main Event: MJF defeated Sammy Guevara
They got a lot of time and used it as MJF defeated Sammy Guevara in the main event in a very good match, letting them close again on a strong main event. MJF’s Jackie Fargo strut is almost Jarrett-level good. Sammy? No. They admittedly started off a little slow as their chain wrestling looked forced and far from smooth (Flair-Windham it was not) but once they found their rhythm, they never slowed down. They just couldn’t do it without a bunch of shenanigans with Shawn Spears, Wardlow, and Le The Virus is Hoax getting involved but it was still a good match with some Nitro thrown in.
Overall, good show from WWE Dyna—AEW Dynamite.
