AEW Dynamite: Awesome Show

Kenny Omega vs Jungle Boy AEW Dynamite main event graphic

Show air date: June 26, 2021

AEW Dynamite put on one of their best efforts on Saturday. Really good wrestling throughout, commentary was on point with everyone playing to their strengths, and AEW finally realizing short, sharp promos work better than long, droning ones (pay attention, New York!!).

Talent needs to stop talking to Alex Marvez in the parking lot. It’ Ambush Central. This week, Shawn Spears introduced Sammy Guevara to his chair.

Adam Page defeated Powerhouse Hobbs

Hangman Page beat Powerhouse Hobbs in the opening match and it was a good one, probably Hobbs’ best match to date. Page would be better served to let go of all the aerial moves and just be a banger. It’s his strength. Got a little messy with the appearance of the rest of Team Taz–Ricky Starks, Brian Cage, and Hook (ew)–but they didn’t play into the finish as Page won with the Deadeye piledriver. It just makes zero sense for Taz to be working commentary and not at ringside with his own guys. I cannot imagine why they insist on doing this.

They’re Just Better as Heels

Good backstage promo from tag champions the Young Bucks and stooge, Brandon Cutler. They’re just better as heels.

Konnan Lit Tully Up on the Mic

Representing his old Impact charges, Santana and Ortiz (finally officially known as “Proud and Powerful”), Konnan made his AEW debut and lit Tully Blanchard, representing FTR of the Pinnacle, up on the mic. Then the old Horseman pulled the hot trick, with FTR coming out disguised at PnP, dropping Konnan with a spike piledriver. Great, great segment.

Matt Sydal defeated Dante Martin

After a tense moment with Andrade El Idolo on the ramp, Matt Sydal beat Daunte Martin in a good match. Sydal vs Andrade will be great.

Christian Cage was good in his pep talk to Jungle Boy Jack Perry before Perry’s world title shot main event.

A Lot of Great Talking This Episode

Another great promo from TNT champion, Miro. A lot of good talking this episode.

Ethan Page defeated Bear Bronson

“All Ego” Ethan Page of the Men of the Year beat Bear Bronson of Bear Country (with Bear Boulder) in a match where the veterans of Page and Scorpio Sky stayed one step ahead of the younger Bear Country. Page then challenges long-time, multi-company rival Darby Allin to a Coffin match at the July 7th show.

Good short promos from Women’s champion Dr. Britt Baker, DMD, and Rebel and then by number one contender Nyla Rose and Vickie Guerrero.

Kris Statlander defeated Bunny

Kris Statlander beat Bunny in a solid match but a bit long. Big angle at the end with TH2 came out and held Orange Cassidy for the Blade to slug him with a big ass set of knuckle dusters.

Good promo from QT Marshall, who is set for a strap match against Cody Rhodes next Wednesday. Another good promo, this time from Eddie Kingston and Penta, with Alex Abrahantes, GOAT of interpreters, translating for Penta.

Main Event: Kenny Omega (c) defeated Jungle Boy

for the AEW World Championship

In an excellent match and the clear match of the week on TV, World champion Kenny Omega successfully defended his title against a game Perry. Omega just works better heel and Perry has an old-school, white meat babyface thing going for him. If you want an old-school reference, this was a modern-day Ric Flair vs Ricky Morton from 86. Tiger Driver 98, followed by One Winged Angela and that’s it. They close with a wild brawl involving Christian Cage, followed by Matt Hardy attacking Cage. Then Frankie Kazarian and the Bucks show up to give the Super Elite the edge.

Strong finish to a strong show.
